Overview

Every scout deserves a trained leader. All leaders must take Youth Protection Training. Following Youth Protection Training there is position specific training available as well as supplemental trainings. Please see below for more information. All online training can be found at my.scouting.org.

 

Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection training is designed to help you keep our youth safe from abuse and is required of all registered adult members and recommended for all scouting parents. You will learn the Boy Scouts of America's Youth Protection Guidelines, signs of abuse, and how to report suspected abuse. After each section of material, you will answer questions about that section's topic. This course must be completed to earn the "Trained" emblem. Completion is NOT always noted automatically in the BSA training records database and you should always send your council office a copy of your YPT certificate of completion. Estimated time to complete: 25 minutes.

 

Cub Scout Leader Training

Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training is available online. Video Courses for each specific position are listed. Complete the Leader Position Specific videos for your Scouting Position. The videos for Before the 1st Meeting and The First 30 days, are optional. Completion is NOT always noted automatically in the BSA training records database, you must make sure your BSA Person ID number to your my.scouting.org account matches the BSA Person ID number for your BSA membership, and if it does not match, contact the council office. Supplemental training for Cub Scout leaders includes BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) and OWLS (Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills). At least one adult giving leadership to a Pack overnighter must complete BALOO and be present on campouts. At least one adult giving leadership to a Webelos Den overnighter must complete OWLS. BALOO and OWLS estimate time to complete (each): 6 hours.

 

Boy Scout & Varsity Scout Leader Training

Boy Scout and Varsity Scout Leaders are required to complete Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Position Specific Training. The Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Position Specific course is intended to help adult leaders in leadership positions within their troops understand their responsiblities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. Check your council training calendar for dates classes are offered. Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills Training is an additional required course that provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank.

 

Venturing Leader Training

Venturing Leader Position Specific Training is required for all Venturing Crew Advisors, Associate Advisors, Committee Chairs, Committee Members, and Parent Coordinators. This training is available online at ScoutingU. Use your My.Scouting.org account username and password to login and begin training. Completion is NOT always noted automatically in the BSA training records database, you must make sure your BSA Person ID number to your My.Scouting.org account matches the BSA Person ID number for your BSA membership, and if it does not match, contact the council office.

 

Committee Chair & Committee Member Training

Unit Committee Training is required for all Committee Chairs and Committee Members. This course focuses on the core beliefs, aims, and methods of Scouting. It specifically helps each committee member learn and identify his or her role and responsibilities in support of the unit in order to provide a quality troop experience for the Scouts.This training is  available at my.scouting.org.

 

Supplemental Training

All supplemental training can be found on my.scouting.org. Most of the supplemental training be found under the Boy Scouting section. Supplemental Training includes Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense, Weather Hazards, Climb On Safely, Trek Safely, and more. Estimated time to complete supplemental trainings (each): 20-25 minutes.
